Apologies for not getting back to you earlier - intentions was there but inundated with work waiting from our holiday!

We had an absolutely BRILLIANT break. The hotel and staff were fantastic, the food ....... what to say except we all packed on the kgs whilst there!

The manager upgraded us to a villa when we were checking in which was great and completely unexpected.

Weather co-operated completely and we had no rain apart from two early morning showers.

It really was a fantastic break for us and many thanks to you for all your work in making so enjoyable.

UNFORTUNATELY .............. it was too short at 7 days and we left loads of stuff out. So we will have to go back again to finish off !!

Just wanted to give you feedback ...........

Thank you so much for organising our trip to Selous and Zanzibar this Christmas. We have a fantastic time. I hadn't really thought about the trip at all as I had been so busy at work and left with a small luggage bag with a few relevant items. So totally unprepared! We arrived In Tanzania amidst a bit of confusion and were really excited by the wee aeroplane which flew us to Selous. The safari was great and then we left for Zanzibar in a great storm. We arrived looking like drowned rats at the Z Hotel but the pent house was defintiely worth it. The staff were wonderful and they created a really lovely Christmas for all the guest - with mince pies on our beds and children's choir on Christmas eve. We even had a wedding at the hotel on the beach.............!

Anyway John, its always good to hear nice info and I wanted you to know we had a great time and thank you for all your hard work in putting it together .

How lovely of you to ask.

Fumba Beach Lodge was such a lovely hotel, didn’t really feel like a hotel at all, more like a series of self-contained huts. It was picture postcard perfect and felt calm, peaceful and rustically understated. Gorgeous.

We had a great safari too, our ranger said we’d been very lucky. I think I liked the leopards and the eagle owl best.

I am so sorry not to have got back to you before. I just wanted to say that we had an absolutely fantastic holiday in Tanzania and Zanzibar. Thanks to you the choice of hotels was excellent and the z suite was an inspired recommendation
It worked brilliantly with our kids in the room below and having the suite as a wonderful gathering point, especially at sunset. The Neptune Pwani was was great too and a good contrast to the Z in terms of its size and facilities. I undertstand that a friend of mine has been in touch and I believe has ended up booking a similar holiday. I'm sure they'll have a great time too.

We certainly want to go back one day, so may well be in touch again.

Hi Ali,

Trip was fantastic. We thought Unguja Lodge was really lovely. Everyone was so helpful and friendly and the place is beautiful. Food is also very very good with a changing menu every day. Would fully recommend it to anyone.

As far as transfers arranged by yourselves, they were on time, friendly and comfortable. Everything you could have asked for

The only problem we had was that I have had a very upset stomach for over a week. It may just be the malaria tablets or possibly something I ate at some point, who knows... The sooner it clears up the better. I would warn any first time goers (as I was myself) on visiting Malaria zones etc that it may be a possible side effect to watch out for (24hr problems are obviously common in many places). It seems rare though and everybody else at Unguja seemed fine, emma certainly was. The staff were amazingly helpful and said they have seen a few people with differing effects from Malerone that are never mentioned by your doctor and seemed to think that it was the culprit.

I honestly can't praise the lodge or the staff enough, they really were wonderful and made it a lovely experience.

Hope this helps and thanks for all your help... I will recommend Pure Zanzibar to anyone thinking of travelling

Hey Bruce,

Thanks for getting in touch. It was on my 'to do' list to get in contact with you but so much to sort out since being back I haven't found the time yet so glad you chased.

In short, the honeymoon was absolutely fantastic and exceeded all our expectations (which were very high to begin with lol). The safari was amazing, accommodation and food excellent, the guide (Wilson) first class and we saw loads of wildlife. The Baraza was incredible and the perfect way to spend the second week. We didn't want to leave.

Thanks to you and your team for sorting this out. As you know we had our reservations when first booking the honeymoon due to the variety and expense of it all but we are 100% satisfied and will definitely be back for our next trip. Thanks for convincing us :)

I owe you a massive thank you. I re-iterate that the whole process of dealing with yourself was one of the best customer services experience I have ever had. You have been very very patient throughout several conversations we have had right from the start. You always came across very friendly and were fully happy to hear what I wanted, in order to cater for my needs and budget. I found all your help and advice very honest, completely impartial and all in my interest. Personal recommendations such as exactly which room/suite to stay in a specific hotel for its decor and better views is just stunning and is something that will always stick in my mind. Little things like where to eat and what tours to do. You never expect such detailed advice. Such local knowledge is invaluable in deciding an important trip. Just a note to say a big thankyou for arranging our time at Breezes. All the transfers went very smoothly and Breezes was absolutely fantastic. The room selection you advised was perfect, the location is spectacular and the food amazing. We had such a great time and will go back one day. Stone Town was interesting – but one day was probably enough and compared to Breezes we thought the hotel was a bit overpriced – just an observation really. They were very helpful with us leaving baggage etc so no complaints.

Yellow Fever - Update

There has been a little confusion over this in the last few days. Initially we received advice stating that Zanzibar would now require the certificate irrespective of where you are travelling from or your route. At the time we felt this odd as Tanzania itself had not changed its position, however felt it best to warn our guests just in case they got jabbed on arrival which would not be ideal!

Today we have received a new notification from the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar that supersedes any previous that states:

‘all arrivals from endemic countries including Africa and South America must be vaccinated against yellow fever and show the certificate at the point entries in Zanzibar. Direct arrivals from non endemic countries in Europe and North America are not required to show the certificate but are highly recommended to take shots against yellow fever for own safety’

So in short it appears that things are back to normal.... for the moment.

It’s worth mentioning here that a flight via Nairobi for example does not count as direct so you would require the certificate. Once you have had it done you need a booster within one year and then you will be covered for 10 years. – If in any doubt always consult your doctor.

Yellow Fever

Pure Zanzibar has received a communication this morning from the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar, warning that following a severe outbreak of yellow fever in Northern Uganda, ALL visitors (not just previously designated countries) to Zanzibar will be required to present a valid yellow fever certificate of vaccination on entry. Tour operators are advised to ensure that there clients have valid vaccination certificates before travel.

Just to let you know that Taryn and I had an amazing time in Zanzibar, We really loved the palms and would recommend it highly. The staff were great, very friendly and efficient. The rooms were great, with ample space and well cleaned daily. Food was good, but did get a bit much with four courses every meal, but not really a complaint.

Travelling during the snow.

If your flight is cancelled you are entitled (under Regulation (EC) 261/2004) to the following;

1. Refund or re-routing

1. If you decide not to travel you are entitled to a refund, within seven days, of the parts of the tickets not used. If it is a connecting flight and you have already made part of the journey and do not want to continue with it, reimbursement of the total price of the ticket (including parts of the journey not made if the flight is no longer serving any purpose in relation to your original travel plan) within seven days and a free flight back to point of departure.

You are not entitled (under Regulation (EC) 261/2004) to reimbursement of any other components of your trip such as hotel and transfer costs.

Re-routing to your final destination as soon as possible or, if you agree, at a later date. (If the airline flies you to another airport in your destination city then they must pay for the transfer to the airport you were booked for or to another close-by point of your choice).

2. Compensation

The airline is not obliged to pay compensation if it can prove that the cancellation was caused by "extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken".

3. Assistance at the airport

· Meals and refreshments in reasonable relation to waiting time

· Two free telephone calls, emails, telexes or faxes

· Overnight hotel accommodation and transfers

Regulation EC261/2004 states circumstances under which airlines must pay compensation to their passengers when their flights are disrupted. But it also says that airlines do not have to pay compensation when an event "has been caused by extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken".

The Regulation also gives the following examples of such circumstances:

political instability
bad weather
security risks
unexpected flight safety shortcomings
strikes that affect the operation of an air carrier
air traffic management decisions

One of the most common reasons for delays and cancellations is what airlines call "technical problems". And airlines took the view that technical problems were "unexpected flight safety shortcomings". So they did not pay compensation when disruptions were caused by technical problems.

However, in December 2008, the European Court of Justice made a ruling that, as a general rule, airlines should not refuse to pay compensation when a flight is disrupted due to technical problems. They would only refuse to pay if the problem "stems from events which, by their nature or origin, are not inherent in the normal exercise of the activity of the air carrier concerned and are beyond its actual control".

To receive reimbursement for components of your trip other than that detailed above you will need to contact your travel insurance company. Individual policies will vary in the level of cover and the circumstances they protect, much like your car insurance. Unfortunately neither we nor our suppliers will be able to reimburse on any unused components of your trip or refund any additional purchase you might make.

We will however be happy to assist you, when possible, in making alternative arrangements to meet up with / cancel your trip should you suffer from a delayed departure, a reschedule or cancellation. Any additional costs will need to be met by you and later claimed from your insurance where applicable.

If your flights are delayed or cancelled due to adverse weather please let us know so that we can inform our ground teams and your accommodations not to expect you as scheduled. This will prevent cancellation should you arrive a few days later than planned and stop us worrying that you are lost in transit.

Tanzania to get new Tourism Minister

Tanzania, an upcoming African tourist destination, has a new tourism minister, Mr. Ezekiel Maige, who is taking over from the former counterpart in the same portfolio, Mrs. Shamsa Mwangunga.

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete appointed Mr. Maige to hold the full tourism ministerial portfolio in his newly-formed cabinet, which he announced Wednesday this week in Tanzania’s capital of Dar es Salaam.

Before his new appointment, Mr. Maige was a deputy minister in the same ministry before dissolution of the cabinet in August this year to pave way for general elections and the formation of a new government.

The new tourism minister will oversee challenges in Tanzania’s fast-growing tourist industry at the time that vigorous marketing campaigns to attract more tourists are taking place across the world.

Mr. Maige will be responsible to oversee daily activities affecting his ministry's departments, including wildlife and forest resources. His ministry is also responsible for controlling key tourist sites, including the 15 tourist wildlife parks, Ngorongoro Conservation Area where the famous Ngorongoro Crater is located, and Selous Game Reserve – the biggest and most natural wildlife reserve in Africa.

It is the home of the tallest mountain in Africa, the legendary Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, the world-acclaimed Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge, Ruaha wildlife park - now the second largest National Park in Africa, and the spice islands of Zanzibar.

The honeymoon was wonderful - thank you so much for all your help and answering the endless questions.

We loved Manta - there were only about 6 - 8 other guests so we felt very well looked after. Unguja was so idyllic and delightful too.

thank you also for the day trip when we stayed at Unguja - it was fantastic.

We didn't use the car service other than to and from the airport but knowing we could was a source of great comfort.

all in all the fortnight was so memorable and coming back has been a big culture shock.

Hi Bruce,

I just wanted to say thank you for your advice and organising everything in Zanzibar. It all went like clockwork, from the driver arriving (45 minutes early) to pick us up to go to Arusha through to the flight on ZanAir. Kasha was great, and perfect to get over Kilimanjaro, and the food and service was very good - the staff really made such an effort. I very much enjoyed 236 Hurumzi (although our room was changed from Crystal to Amber upon check-in). I'd also really recommend dinner at Swahili House.

just a quick e-mail to tell you what a fantastic holiday we had with yourselves,everything was super.

Please find attached some photos of us on safari and one of Guy co-piloting us to Zanzibar, what a treat that was for him.
We did the jeep, walking and boat safaris, Guy got to hold the rangers gun at the end of the walking safari. Everything went like clockwork and the staff at Breezes were lovely.

Having recently returned from a 12 day holiday to Zanzibar, Matemwe beach village, we are delighted to report that this proved to be all we had hoped for and so much more!

We have been impressed by the diligent and knowledgeable travel administrator, Nick, at Pure Zanzibar. He advised with care and thought, his hotel / destination suggestion was perfect, 100%. He clearly assessed our needs and requirements, carefully judging our criteria and personalities with patience and genuine interest and consideration.

We could not fault the Hotel and totally support Nicks thoughts about the establishment, the staff being ‘great, really friendly and relaxed’ – ‘no shoes, no news’ motto also helps.

Nick and his colleagues at Pure Zanzibar, provided concise, thorough information and support prior to our departure to Zanzibar. We were grateful for this attention for detail and their level of enthusiasm for the destination was also quite infectious.

The Zan Air representative, Ami, was also excellent and provided us with a warm Zanzibar greeting, setting the tone for what would be an amazing holiday we will never forget. We will most definitely be going back!

The rest of the herds are being seen around the far tip of the Western Corridor and are expected to heading north to cross the river soon so that they can visit our Kenyan neighbours for a couple of months.

The wildebeest and zebra, due to the unusual weather patterns, are dispersed around various areas of Serengeti National Park. Our guides inform us that some groups can be seen still around the Gol Kopjes Areas but also as far north as Lobo and Mbuzi Mawe. We are keeping in close communication with our guides in the field to see where they will go next since these patters are really quite extra ordinary. We will keep you posted to watch this space!

5 Endangered Black Rhinos arrive back in the Serengeti

History was made over the last few weeks with the repatriation of five endangered Eastern Black Rhinoceros who were moved from South Africa back to their rightful home in East Africa.

The animals arrived at Singita Grumeti Reserve in the Serengeti National Park in the first phase of a joint venture which has been cited as the most ambitious wildlife relocation in East Africa over the past 50 years.

Tanzania - Another world heritage site?

It is understood that Dar es Salaam has applied to UNESCO for the declaration of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park as a World Heritage Site. The park, referred to as an ‘undiscovered gem' offers a wide range of mammals, the red colobus monkey, 400 bird species, numerous butterflies and the highest waterfall in Tanzania (the 170m Sanjes Falls). The park also offers extended walks and hikes through rain forest. At present no formal accommodation exists within the park.

Despite having received a lot of rain showers in and around the various areas of Serengeti National Park, the wildebeest herds have remained in and around the Moru Area throughout the month of April. Only now have they started moving north west but very slowly.

Clients have had excellent sightings throughout their safaris not only have they seen the ‘big 5’ but one group even witnessed a couple of hungry lioness’ kill a zebra for their afternoon tea!

Therefore the saying to avoid Tanzania in the rainy season is a myth and in our personal opinion one of the best times to come to the destination.

Manta Resort - Diving Update

We went diving at a new site close to the resort. Water temperature 25C, visibility about 20m. We were about to decent, and saw a group of dolphins, approximately 60 swimming towards the boat. Then while we were descending, the dolphins swam right past us! They were about 10m from us! We went to down to about 40 meters, as we had a group of experienced divers. Firstly, we saw three Manta Rays swimming towards us, and after about 5 minutes a group of 30 Manta Rays swam right over us! They were less than 10 meters above our heads!

Update on beach erosion at La Gemma

The Management at La Gemma del ´Est informs that most of the work protecting the beach had been completed by end of February but further work still continued through till March. This work has been concentrated at the water sports area on the extreme left hand side of the beach, sea facing. No machinery or heavy equipment was to be used during this time.

Water sports such water ski, wakeboard, windsurf, canoes are available, at the moment only sailing with catamaran is not available. There has been some slight disturbance in completing the access stairs leading down onto the public beach which were expected to be completed at the end of the month totalling 3 in all. All rooms are away from the works, as they are located on the extreme left side of the beach (when facing the sea), they take place from 07.30 till 04.30pm.

Hello Ed,

Just would like to thank you so much for helping us arrange such a wonderful holiday in Tanzania and Zanzibar.

We had a fantastic time at both venues.

The Foxes Safari camp at Mikumi was a tremendous experience. The tented accomodation was excellent and although the kitchen and dining facilities were not fully functional, and the pool was still being refurbished after the fire that destroyed the camp there two years ago, we had no complaints. The staff were very friendly and incredibly helpful; and our driver and guide on our game drives were exceptional - how our guide saw the leopard and lion and directed our attention to them was phenomenal - what eyesight.

Neptune Pwani was exceptional. The resort itself was immaculate, as was our accomodation. Food was excellent and once again staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

All told, the holiday was a fitting treat for our ruby wedding anniversary.

Unguja Lodge Update

Unguja Lodge now has its own PADI Dive Centre: Unguja Divers.
To be able to meet the requirements of our guests even better, One Ocean and Unguja Lodge agreed on Unguja Lodge taking over the dive centre from 1st of March 2010 onwards.

Unguja Divers will continue to offer high quality water activities. In the coming (low season) months we will develop new activities, like sea kayaking.
From 1st of July onwards we will organise free sunset cruises two times a week.

Hi Ed, as promised I thought I would let you know what our thoughts of our holiday were.

Firstly the Z Hotel, we really liked the hotel and the location. The room was fantastic - we reckoned the best there, better than the Z suite as it had a sun terrace whereas the Z suite didn't appear to have any space to sunbath on - it all appreared to be covered by the roofing. We also thought it was better than the ocean view cottages - although they now have a big screen which shields them from view from the restaurant.

The food was fabulous but to be fair we only ate at the hotel 2 nights of the 10 we went outside to the local places the other nights. We ate at the 2 seafood BBQ nights at the hotel and the food was really really good freshly cooked in front of you. I am not a buffet fan as you know but they served it to us on the first week for my birthday so we went back on the second week as it was so nice.

My only criticism would be the service from the staff - one or two were good but we thought that some of them were lethargic and even lazy. For example when around the poolside they wouldn't come and ask if you wanted a drink you had to go to the bar and they also sat and watched you struggle to move sunbeds and put up umbrellas. I would have to say there were one or two who did help but most were happy to hide behind the bar and text on their mobile phones. I think Keith the owner should make a trip to Unguja Lodge!!

Talking of which what a fantastic place this was!! We absolutely loved it there. The place was beautiful, the staff out of this world and the owners were so wonderful and attentive. You are right in saying that the beach here is not anywhere near as good as Nungwi but that didn't seem to matter. We wished we had spent all 13 nights here we loved it so much. The villas are great and the location is fab but what really makes it are the owners and the staff - we felt really spoilt. They even set up a candlelit meal on the beach with a cake for my birthday which was a complete suprise and was so wonderful it made me cry!! Elies also made me a birthday card that was on the bed when we arrived!!

We saw monkeys roaming around the grounds - it really is a special place. We can't wait to go back hopefully next year. I am not one for returning to places but we just loved it so much here that we will definately return.

It is hard to comment on the Zanzibar Palace hotel as we arrived at midday and left at 6am the next monring. We had a great room and loved the outdoor bathroom and outside sun deck. We didn't like Stone Town - it was a dump!!!! I think next time I will stay at the beautiful Unguja Lodge and get up at 3am!!!!

Power Update

The government of Zanzibar has announced that the extended power blackout the island has generally been faced with since December last year, will come to an end once repair works are completed by the end of this week.

What's more, in an effort to avert a similar crisis in future, the government plans to have a new power cable with a capacity of 100MW to replace the existing older one by 2012. Meanwhile, back-up generators, which have already been purchased in Norway, are anticipated to be on the island within the next 4 to 5 weeks.

Unusually, the heavy rains continued in Northern Tanzania for the best part of January, with conditions very similar to those during the rains of 98/99. Basically we had el Niño number ‘dos’, making the operation of safaris in the parks very ‘adventurous’ to say the least! However, this obviously did not put off any of the animals who were basking in the lush pastures and made for some great animal viewing for our clients. The migration for the whole of January was in full swing around the Ndutu area, with the plains just covered with black dots. The cats were out in full force trying to get the catch of the day! We are looking forward to February which is traditionally the start of the calving season and we are certain that all the clients are going to have some great experiences…..we just hope that Ndutu dries out a bit and we don’t have to have mud baths!

Unguja Lodge Update

We thought they were only to be found on Chumbe Island and Kwale Island but...we found a COCONUT CRAB close to villa 7 in our own lodge.

The sea is absolutely beautiful these months. With the wind coming from the North, Menai Bay is shielded. This means flat seas, very clear water of a stunning colour and with nice temperature. Yesterday around 17.00 pm with high tide, we found all our guests swimming in the sea. Lovely!

Unguja Lodge manages well with the Zanzibar electricity problem. So far guests have noticed hardly anything. We run our big gemerator during the day from 07.00-23.00h and only switch if off from 11.00-12.00 and from 16.00-18.00h. At these times most guests are out (on the beach) or at the pool. During the night (23.00-07.00h) we run a smaller generator so our guests can use light and fans in the villas.

According to the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators. Operators and visitors to Zanzibar that the island is well equipped to deal with this temporary situation as power outages are commonplace and generator backup is provided in all hotels and resorts. Therefore all services including tourism, communication and transportation continue to function with no significant or noticeable disruption.

Ras Nungwi - Power Update

Further to our email of 17 December 2009, we would like to update you on the Zanzibar power situation.

Since 10 December, there has been no mainline power on the island and unfortunately, per a recent Zanzibar Government announcement, we are now not expecting it to be restored until 22 February.

However, we would like to assure you that guests at Ras Nungwi are not being affected by the power cut and this has been the case since we last emailed you on this matter, except for 3 hours downtime for essential maintenance on one occasion. We have two generators and are providing 24/7 continuous power, which we intend to continue with, barring unforeseen circumstances.

Zanzibar Palace Update

A stay in our hotel in Stone Town is the perfect start for all major tours and trips. Take a Spice Tour which is just 15 minutes by car from our hotel, a trip to Prison Island and see the turtles, a city tour to see all the culture, historical buildings in the Unesco World Heritage Site of Stone Town. We can arrange all these and other trips for our guests.

You might already know that there is an electricity problem until the 21st of February 2010 on Zanzibar. We have a generator that is capable of running 24 hours a day. We are running it almost the full day, except for about 1 hour for necessary maintenance on the generator. We have constantly enough water in the hotel. So we have an almost normal situation for all our guests.

Many other places in Stone Town are also equipped with backup generators and therefore the situation is relatively normal in the hotels, restaurants and many shops (tourist places).

All above facilities are always available, so it is not specially for the current situation only! Zanzibar and mainland are frequently hit by power and water outage, so we have had taken our precautions for much longer already.

We remind you that we have a new manager and chef de cuisine as well. His name is Gilbert van Lee originating from Belgium. Gilbert serves the finest fresh seafood that you can find on the Island in our private restaurant. Daily we have a special Tonight’s Dinner choose, with specially selected wines. The main courses vary from Jumbo Prawns, Red Snapper, Barracuda and Marlin to the famous 1kg up to 2.5 kg Char grilled Lobster. Although we mainly serve seafood, vegetarians will find their dinner with us too and meat is also available; a good example is our fine Carpaccio of Springbok as starter.

A month-long power blackout in Tanzania's semi-autonomous Zanzibar is threatening the idyllic Indian Ocean island's tourist industry, officials said Tuesday.

The archipelago's main island, Unguja, has been without power since December 10 due to a breakdown affecting the undersea cable providing electricity from the mainland.

Energy Minister Yussuf Himid said the submarine cable was dilapidated and needs to be replaced as it can no longer sustain increasing energy demand.

Businesses and homes are running on generators and tourism, which accounts for 20 percent of the archipelago's earnings, has suffered.

"Already we have a drop in revenue collection and trade in Zanzibar has decreased due lack of electricity," Zanzibar President Amani Karume said as he opened a new shopping mall. He did not give figures.

"It is now the tourism season... There have been a lot of bookings in hotels since November last year, but tourists cannot stay longer because of lack of electricity," Zanzibar Association for Tourist Investors chairman Simai Mohamed told reporters.

"Most hotels have standby generators which cannot operate 24 hours. And also running generators for hours is quite expensive," he added.

Tourism Minister Samia Suluhu Hassan said: "It is obvious that tourists are not happy walking on streets in the night without lights on. Lack of power also discourages investors."

Officials said two water bottling firms have shut down because of the cuts and the island has been hit by a water shortage.

Zanzibar, whose other islands are Pemba and Mafia, has suffered prolonged blackouts in the past, including a four-week blackout in 2008.

At the moment the diving is amazing in Menai Bay: water is very clear, coral is in good condition and there is lots to be seen.

On Kizidi reef (about 18 meters) for instance we see frog fish, leaf fish, blue spotted sting rays, spanish dancers, lion fish, scorpion fish etc.
On the deeper Dolphin wall we see reef sharks, turtles, kobias and Napoleon fish.

In our gardens we see a few couples of elephant shrews every day.

Electricity Update - Fumba Beach Lodge

As you might be aware of, since the last 2 weeks the whole of Zanzibar experience an power blackout because of a fault at the main transformer. The power should have been turned on yesterday (It did for 20 minutes) but another problem occurred and we are looking at no electricity for the whole of Zanzibar for the coming 3 weeks before power will return to Zanzibar.

We at Fumba Beach Lodge are trying to get as much electricity per day by means of generators, however its not 24 hours a day. Water is not an problem as we have our own borehole and we are supplying the village as well. In the last week 2 tankers arrived on Zanzibar to offload diesel and we are stocking up 2000 to 3000 liters in order to keep going in case of shortage of fuel.

Zanzibar will remain in darkness for one month after some gadget in the power supply system from Tanzania Mainland collapsed on Monday. This means Zanzibaris and visitors to the isles may be inconvenienced during Christmas and New-Year celebrations.

Zanzibar Minister for Energy, Construction, Water and Land Mr Mansour Yussuf Himid said here yesterday that the blackout might last for at least one month.

“Unfortunately the gadget known as ‘splitter’ collapsed yesterday (Monday) when technicians attempted to switch on power after days of efforts to repair the main receiver at Fumba power station,” he said.

Fumba, Unguja West is the power station receiving electricity from Rasikiromoni, Tanzania mainland through submarine cable. Mr Mansour told reporters in his office in Zanzibar that already preparations were underway to purchase the ‘splitter’ from abroad.

“We ask people to remain patient as we try to restore electricity. We expect to complete the work within one month”, he explained.

Mr Mansour also emphasized that the current 45 megawatts cable transporting power from mainland was dilapidated and needed replacement urgently to avoid frequent breakdowns in future.

Frequent power failures in the isles have caused many problems including shortage of clean and safe water, and fuel, which in turn sparked price rise of commodities and fares.

However, Mr Mansour said that there was now sufficient fuel to last at least for one month. He said the government was also working round the clock to find alternative power by purchasing generators.

“We’re considering long term plans of producing power through wind and solar though they are very expensive projects”, the minister added.

Christine and her team went out of her way to help us, the pick ups were all on time, very comfortable cars and the drivers were delightful and so interetsting to talk to.

Ralph and Else at Unguja were so helpful. Please can you thank them so much for enabling Gary to be reunited with his fountain pen at the airport - brilliant organisation on your part. I also hope that Peter at Kasha has returned the room key to them as he promised to do.

As you know Kasha was a disappointment, but we were so impressed by the way you handled the situation and were able to extract us from there into Pongwe. I think Peter was very decent to refund the two nights for us - how do we go about this - does it get credited back to my credit card? It is a shame, but we felt so uncomfortable there. Pongwe more than made up for it and we cant wait to go back.

Our trip to Stone Town went well and we enjoyed the Zanzibar Palace.

We are most impressed by Pure Zanzibar and sorry for the additional work we caused you with Kasha and the pen. You can judge a travel agent by what they book and arrange for you, but I think a better judge is how they deal with problems while you on holiday - you guys definitely get an A+!

I can’t tell you how much we have just loved our trip!!!!......it was probably one of the best holidays we have had and all down to your hard work in making it so. We did not have one hiccup and had the most wonderful driver called Martin who was just superb. Please pass on to your team in Africa and let them know how special Martin is. He was so passionate and caring and obviously very intelligent. My Parents just could not get over his care and concerns to make this so special for us all. The campsite on the first night was far too far for our next day journey and made this an incredible amount of driving for Martin but saying that is was the most magical place and he didn’t once complain. The whole journey could not have gone any better and we only wished we could have had more time. We saw practically every animal the Serengeti could throw at us and for my mother this was especially wonderful as she has been a volunteer at Whipsnade Zoo for 23 years!!!. My father was speechless at Speke Bay as there were so many birds and all of us of course were so delighted to meet Bridgitte’s boys at Mwanza. This I think was quite an experience for Martin too but he was just fabulous taking us there. I can’t even begin to tell you how the Dolphin View Hotel was and we were spoilt incredibly with the most wonderful staff. They obviously have an enormous task on their hands to bring it up to spec but I am sure one day it will be a top class retreat and one we will never forget.
So thank you once again for making it all happen and hope we can book again with you some day as Bridgitte will definitely be working at Kuleana Street Project again!!!!

Monday 19th October : Ras Nungwi – Neptune Pwani

After a successful internet session in the lounge of Ras Nungwi, we moved on to our next stop for the night on the North East coast and were delighted to find newly tarred roads and the occasion sign to help us on our way.

Neptune Pwani was a straight up winner with me, we arrived through large iron gates to bright pink flowers climbing the walls that boarder the resort and an impressive drive way leading to an open reception area with a central fountain and smiling Italian faces!

This was our first taste of the All Inclusive larger hotels on the Island and it was just as promised – beautifully maintained and managed with excellence, nothing was out of place and nothing a problem. All the Villas which contain 4 rooms each have individual solar panels & their two free form pools are the biggest on the Island. I finally got to swim and we had an afternoon to ourselves for reading and sunbathing in the shade. This was the first buffet style self service hotel and the food was 5* with a fresh fish grill, pasta station where dishes were made to order and you created your own sauces ( chilli, cheese & bacon for me and boy oh boy is Zanzibari chilli HOT ) and much much more.

I enjoyed our day at Neptune Pwani and would happily have stayed a few more though it would certainly result in serious weight gain.

Sunday 18th October : The Z Hotel – Ras Nungwi

We left The Z shortly after mid day and headed north to call in at the new Hilton Doubletree - a large development on the site of Nungwi Beach Village, the final resort on the northern tip of the Island.

They have built four blocks of rooms each with beautifully crafted local furniture and views out to the Ocean. We were suitably impressed and where you often find the international branded hotels can leave you feeling you could be anywhere in the world, this property had a distinct Zanzibari feel.

Though the hotel is in its final stages of completion, the staff were lovely and we had a beach front table for lunch and a really tasty beef & aubergine pizza – a new one on me and one I’ll be repeating when I get home along with upside down banana caramel cake from Olakira & spiced corgette soup from Echo Beach!

After lunch we headed to Ras Nungwi where we managed to get the last five minutes of sunshine on the beach and both promptly fell asleep. We awoke for dinner and saw a patter emerging of Sleep, Eat, Hotel Inspection, Eat, Drive, Hotel Inspection, sleep, Eat , Sleep and back to the beginning again. When visiting hotels which we didn’t have time to stay at it was only polite to at least stay for lunch. October 2009 is going down in Tarquin & Susie history as the best fed month of our lives!

Ras Nungwi was lovely and catered for an older crowd than the The Z Hotel with a much more subdued vibe and a place where most seemed to be fed and in bed by 9.30 – ourselves included.

Friday 16th – Sunday 18th October : Kilindi – The Z Hotel

Our car was delivered to Kilindi and we set off for The Z Hotel after one last exquisite meal at Kilindi – open Steak Focasia with the most deliciously pleasing sharp dressing which brought through 5 or 6 different flavours, the sign of a wonder chef for sure ! A slight Brandy haze was washed away and we set for the open road.

10 minutes later we were driving along the main road into Nungwi looking for a sign for The Z but failing this we headed down towards Le Gemma and around the back of the hotels from Kwendra towards Nungwi. We later found out that Hafis ( The Z Hotel General Manager) is in talks with the village council to confirm a position for The Z Hotel sign. Self drive guests are very rare indeed in Zanzibar so we were pleased as punch when we arrived using our own local knowledge and the knowledge of a local when we hit a dead end which happened to be the wrong side of the reception wall of the Z, so near.....

We parked up in the courtyard and were met by smiling faces, cold towels and juices before signing in and putting names to faces of the Z team who we work so closely with.

After the lovely James, Haf’s right hand man, showed us around the hotel we settled into The Z Suite which takes the whole of the top floor of one of the two accommodation blocks – wowzer. One balcony was home to our roof top Jacuzzi & the other a seating area with a beautiful brass telescope to keep a look out for pirates. Tarquin had great fun with the Internet connection (TIA as our Leonardo does say in his lovely Rhodesian accent) but he managed to refrain from throwing the laptop over the balcony into the infinity pool below.

Sunset cocktails followed by some giant tempura prawns, crab cakes and two perfectly cooked fillet steaks with mash & vegetables = sleepy travellers and an early night.

The following morning, a full English breakfast was delivered to our room at 9.30am and we guiltily ate not on the balcony overlooking the ocean but in the Air Conditioned room watching Top Gear on BBC world satellite – our first viewing in 10 days and as I caught the end of the news i was deeply sadden that Stephen Gately of Boy Zone had passed away. My little sister Tara was a huge fan and Stephen was her favourite. God rest his soul.

The charming Hafis then took us for a hotel inspection and we were very impressed with what we saw. The 2 cottages set on stilts over the ocean are something else, the upstairs bedrooms have balconies with double doors opening out to you own private Oceanscape, impossible not to wake totally chilled.

Naturally I owed it to the future guests of Pure Zanzibar & The Z Hotel to sample the Spa and enjoyed an hour long deep tissue massage from Agnes at the Lemon Spa.

That evening we dined in Saruche on Surf & Turf for the boy and a lovely chicken dish for myself, delicious wine & after dinner we headed out to Matemwe for a little party and then on to Kwendra for an altogether larger ‘half moon’ party. Tarquin wants to bring chilled and intelligent beats to Zanzibar, I second the notion as after the run of Bob Marley and gangster rap Swahili style came what we guess is the DJ’s offering for the foreigners – YMCA, Boom Boom Boom, various Euro Cheese and a collection of what can only be described as a Yamaha Keyboard demo heaven with an overlay of Baby Baby Baby. The Spanish Costas circa 1992.

After a well earned lie in – the first since our departure some 10 days earlier, we were driven north to the exquisitely charming and other worldly serenity of Kilindi. As we stepped out of the vehicle and were handed vanilla scented ice cold towels to refresh our weary souls we looked at each other with a ‘this is what it is all about’ glint to our eyes.

From the reception area which overlooks the domed roofs that characterise Kilindi, we ascended to the walkways linking the individually designed Pavilions and were shown to a table on the shaded decking of the chic restaurant.

Russell, the Food and Beverages Manager, was behind his elegant bar with water cascading down a huge granite like slab forming the back wall which at this point I just wanted to hug (the wet wall, not Russell). Much to Tarquin’s delight the hotel was half full of Models on a Fashion shoot from Belgium. As I contemplated the scene of a mere mortal like myself in swimwear next to a model half my age & width, I ordered a burger, sunk a few full fat fizzy drinks and retired to the privacy of our own pavilion where i was revered as the true goddess I am !

After a siesta in our palacial size bed (the equivalent of 2 queen size beds) we joined the rest of the guests in the dining area for a dinner of slow roasted goat with orange & beetroot, pea & mint ravioli for Susie & Red Snapper for Tarquin, followed by a locally inspired pudding with a fresh ginger ice cream.

Seronera, Serengeti – Arusha – Zanzibar

Waking up at Olakira camp for our final day on Safari, my eyes flickered open to come into focus on the horizon of the Serengeti plains and a rich golden orange sun illuminating the earth. A breathtaking sight to wake to, especially when you are still tucked up warm in bed and beginning to contemplate the day ahead.

Breakfast was served in the mess tent at 6.30am, toast and omelettes prepared on the barbeque grill and fresh juice to set us up for our game drive before flying out from Seronera at 11.05am.
This last morning we had an exciting ring side seat for a pair of Cheetahs hunting for their breakfast amongst a vast heard of Thomson’s Gazelle. Not dissimilar to watching our domestic cats in the UK creeping low to the ground before pouncing on unsuspecting prey – only the Gazelles clearly sensed the Cheetahs whilst they remained hidden close to the ground amongst the grassy plains. The Cheetahs tried to flank the herds but to no avail as they are nimble little creatures and as soon as one goes they all bolt like wild fire. I particularly enjoyed the chivalry of the male gazelle who stood firm protecting the females to the rear of the heard, furthest from where they sensed danger. Females in the wild are revered, protected and even boss if you are a hyena !

Final stop on our northern Tanzanian adventure was to visit the beautiful Maru Kjopes, an ancient Maassai meeting point which was used for ceremonies before the tribes were moved south from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro. Kjopes is a Dutch word which means ‘big head’ and refers to the clusters of large rocks found off the beaten track in the south east of Seronera. On the giant rocks sits a singular rock drum around 1.5 metres high and 3 metres wide. There are concave cups the size of fists set in the rock and a beating stone which when hit into the individual ‘cups’ gives a different tone. You can bang out a tune Masaai style to the audience which in our case was a leopard in the distance dragging his breakfast to the shade of the rocks. You can imagine the great festivities that took place here through the years and the scene of Massaai tribes coming in from every direction on the 360 panorama of the Serengeti – a word that in Massaai translates to endless plains.

By 10.30am we arrived at Seonera airstrip for our flight with Coastal Aviation to Zanzibar via Arusha. An informal check in procedure which consisted of walking to the aircraft, putting your bag in the hold, being part of a head count and buckling up saw us taking off bang on time. Well, the second time as our first attempt at take off was aborted due to Impala on the runway. 10 minutes in Arusha gave us enough time to have a quick chat with Anita before running back to our connecting flight. It was a little touch and go as our bags had been moved onto the second aircraft for Arusha – Zanzibar & as we had run into the departures lounge to see Anita we had to put our bags through the scanner before departing again (not something they have at Seronera) and a glass bottle was detected.

I politely but firmly informed the guard who was telling me this was a problem that it was not a problem as we had just flown in with the said bottle in hand luggage and any more chit chat with him & we would miss our flight which was revving up to depart. I scurried across the runway flapping my arms and still talking to the guard protesting and as soon as we got to the aircraft the security officer asked me if I had whisky with a smile – I said ‘No, it’s Rum’ and with a big grin again he ushered us onto the plane and off we went !

On arrival into Zanzibar we were met by a driver from Zanzibar Unique with a bottle of ice cold water each and an air conditioned car to drive us to Swahili House in the centre of Stone Town.
The hotel was formally International house and is so much so in the centre of Stone Town that we had to park a few windy streets away as there is no vehicle access to the labyrinth within the old town.

Swahili House is set over 5 floors with an open inner courtyard and rooms situated around the galleried landings. The walk up to the roof top restaurant is a dizzy one when coupled with the intense early afternoon heat and though there is a lift shaft in place, the lift is waiting at Dar Es Salaam port to be released from customs.

Well worth the climb though is the roof top bar and restaurant, Tarquin & I went up for a refresher before heading out to explore Stone Town at 4 in the afternoon and after 10 hours we were still there - all exploration on this particular afternoon was done from the rooftop !
Great cocktails, great service, the best food in Stone Town and the views are stunning. They even have a roof top Jacuzzi and a few sun beds for those who find tanning a daily essential! Hats off to Alex Innes, the chef from the UK who has seen the refurbishment of Swahili House kitchens & the hotel opening in December 2008, creating a destination in itself for rooftop sun downers and dining in the heart of Stone Town.

Today was our last full day to explore the vast grass planes of the Serengeti. We were up early to catch sunrise and hopefully some game before the heat of the day set in. Whilst most of the Serengeti is grassy planes with few trees it also has a river that attracts the animals as the only source of fresh water for miles. Along the banks we were lucky enough to see lots of elephants, lions, hippo and a couple of crocodiles, plus all the now familiar gazelle, zebra and wildebeests. Randomly enough we also bumped into our French rescuers from the day before and witnessed a male lion ‘mark his territory’ all over their Land Rover.

Over the course of the day we were lucky enough to see elephants chasing lions, lions starting to eat their recent catch of buffalo, a leopard resting in a tree and troops of elephants refreshing in the river. Unlike the other parks we had visited this was easily the most spread out but I personally felt gave the best viewing, for wildlife at least.

By the end we were thoroughly knackered, coated in dust and slightly sore from the outrageously bumpy roads but very glad and fortunate to have seen and done what we have. Needless to say there is potential for a stupidly long slide show once we get back if anyone would like to sit through the thousands of pictures??

Another early start. This time we were heading down from the Ngorongoro highlands towards the Serengeti National Park. On route we stopped off at Olduvai Gorge, a famous archaeological site where the earliest remains of our ancestors was found along with some footprints showing that early humans were up on two feet 1.8 million years ago. The site also attracted interest as it contained fossils and artefacts from then almost to date, detailing evolution and our developing use of tools, pots and eventually musical instruments.

After a quick informal lecture and a good look round the small museum we started the long drive to the Serengeti. Our driver was keen to tell us that he knew a short cut so we would be there in no time! Now, anyone who knows anything knows short cuts often aren’t a good idea, after all, If the route was sensible it would just simply be ‘the way’. In Africa the rules are the same. About an hour after leaving Olduvai we found ourselves stuck. At first it didn’t seem like too much of an issue but the car thought otherwise and firmly stayed put digging deeper and deeper holes into the sand. After some time in the midday sun trying to dig / push / pull the land cruiser out our driver decided that he best go for help. Suise – who thought the whole thing rather funny and I were left with the car whilst Ali headed off over the horizon towards where he though the nearest road should be. After a long hour sat waiting in the car with no driver, no phone signal and only able to locate ourselves on the map, give or take a 100km Ali returned with a Land Rover. Fortunately he had managed to flag down a French couple and their guide and convinced them to try and drag us out. To cut a long story short (ish) several different attempts were made to free our car, ranging from towing, winching and straight old fashioned ramming. At one point the rescue vehicle also got stuck and the poor French woman started to panic that she would also be stuck. Neither of us speak good French but just as they were formulating a plan to persuade their driver to abandon his attempts and us in the sand our car became free. Needless to say everyone was relived.

The Serengeti, Maassai for endless plain, was indeed that. We had arrived slightly later than anticipated but the late afternoon sun was perfect for game viewing. We checked in to another of the old government lodges, this time constructed around some rocks and rested. We had elected for a dawn game drive the next day and wanted to make the most of our last day full day on safari.

Unsurprisingly the African morning once again came too soon. It occurred I was in serious danger of seeing more ‘morning time’ this week than the previous month or two combined. Still, I could be in the office or behind a computer....?!

After breakfast and a tour of the farm and its facilities we headed to Plantation Lodge for a site inspection. Whilst this was not expected to be the highlight of our trip it was a stunning example of what can be achieved if you combine a breathtaking view with a large site, a fat wad of cash, and interior designer and an architect with a dream. Each house (to call these accommodations rooms would be unfair) was different to the next in design and purpose, some set up for families, some for group and some beautiful honeymoon suites. The bar / public lounge area was a multi level triumph to lounging and drinking complete with ample seating and glass floor down to a temperature controlled wine cellar and sampling area. If it were alive it would be the (unlikely) love child of Jilly ‘hint of hollyhocks’ Goolden and Kevin ‘fusion of light and space’ McCloud. Sadly whilst we could have happily sampled a vintage or two we had a date with the largest intact caldera in the world.

Once again the crow would have made quick time; however our route winded and meandered up the steep slope towards the rim. On one side the near vertical cliff seemed to continue towards infinity and on the other the view over the forest below did the same. Our Land Cruiser powered on, passing a staggering number of locals pushing heavily laden bicycles up the slope and a few coming back down again, desperate to keep their speed under control. We arrived at the gate around lunch time to be greeted by a confident male baboon that was no doubt aware exactly the time of day and was on the prowl for easy pickings. Whilst he was a little more warily avoiding the locals as he knew some may have catapults he was causing havoc in the ticket queue, toilets and car park systematically checking all the vehicles for any windows that might be left open or for any picnicking tourists.

The Ngorongoro crater is a world heritage site and also known as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’. It has walls 2000 feet high and spans over 10 miles creating a natural amphitheatre with some of the densest populations of large animals found anywhere attracted by the vegetation and year round water. Also, I suspect, the steep sides don’t exactly make it easy to leave.

Our visit was in the middle of the dry season so the vegetation was not at its fullest, however this made spotting a lot easier. We saw many hippo, buffalo, warthog, wildebeest, zebra and several types of gazelle and antelopes. Alongside these herbivores we also saw hyena and lions sleeping within the grass. Sadly the only thing that eluded us was rhino. The exact remaining number of rhino left in the crater is a closely guarded secret often speculated by the game drivers. We heard estimates ranging from 17 to a massive 30. In any event it was clear there was room for a few more. We learnt that the authorities had stopped publishing the figures as this almost provided a guide to the poachers and that numbers were now slowly on the up. Each day the rhino are followed at distance by the park rangers who guard them 24 – 7. At Ngorongoro they have also implemented a scheme to split tourist revenue with the local Maassai who in turn keep an eye on the park rangers to minimise corruption and any illegal hunting.

After driving round all day soaking in the epic landscapes and getting up close and personal with the large herds we headed back up the steep caldera walls to our lodge. Tonight we were to stay at an old government run lodge perched precariously high on the rim 2,286 meters above sea level. Rooms are basic but in the process of being improved, the location however is stunning. At the time it was built it was the pinnacle of both architectural and structural design and as it was government owned they selected themselves the best possible spot. From the balcony’s you got an uninterrupted view across the crater in all directions and could see herds of tinny black specks roaming the crater floor looking for food.

Despite having a relativity early night the morning sun came fast. I did notice a few similarities from the previous morning as Susie tried to convince me to watch the sun rise - which was in the end worth it.

After an early breakfast we left Oliver's Camp at about 8am to travel to Lake Manyara. Lake Manyara National Park is well known for its elephants, hippo and tree climbing lions. Whilst the tree climbing lions managed to successfully elude us we did see lots of monkeys, baboons, elephants, etc. We also managed to see several Hippo wallowing in a small pool barely big enough for them - but as this is the height of the dry season I guess this was their best option. Even the Lake itself, which is Alkaline, is a fraction of the size it should be. As well as the lake the area is covered by forest, unlike any of the other parks we had or would visit. This made it quite a bit cooler under the shade of the large trees and I reckoned it would have been my pick if I had to choose where to live as an animal.

After a full day, abandoned slightly early due to a massive dust storm, we headed out of the park and up the escarpment towards the Ngorongoro area. Overnight was in Gibbs Farm, a colonial style lodge complete with massive open fireplaces and a bath big enough to swim in. After several days on the roads and some epic dust storms it was exactly what we needed.
