Solar Power Project Improves Lives in Zanzibar

Villagers without electricity in Zanzibar are now admiring Kendwa Village in north Unguja, where residents have benefited from a solar power lighting project.

Leaders from far and nearby villages, to Kendwa, feel the project should be extended to areas without electricity in the constituency because "it looks easy and affordable to many poor families." Mr Haroun Ali Suleiman, legislator for Makunduchi in South Unguja, has been among leaders who have openly hailed the Kendwa solar power project, where three women technicians have managed to connect electricity to 80 households in two months.

"This is a good project; I should have it in my constituency where some villages have no electricity," Suleiman said when he visited Kendwa to see the solar power project being supported by the Indian government.Provisionally, there was an agreement between Suleiman and the Consul General of India in Zanzibar, Mr Pawan Kumar who said it was possible to extend the project through women technicians training others in the villages.

"It is possible to extend the project because the three women are now experts and can now train others to do the electrification," the ambassador said. The three illiterate women from Kandwi: Ms Fatma Juma Haji, Ms Patima Ali Adam, Mrs Mwashamba Khamis Makame were sent to India last year for six months practical training in solar power equipment installation. The target is to install solar panels and lamps in about 400 households in Kendwa.

Matemwe Village, in north Unguja has been earmarked for similar project to start as soon as other three women currently finalizing solar power equipment installation course returns homes before the end of this year.

Client Feedback.

Hello Bruce,

Apologies for the time it has taken me to reply to you - I realise you also sent another email before this one !  We had such a wonderful, incredible honeymoon.  I couldn't quite have imagined it would be so good.

We went on a couple of tours through your partners, to Stone Town, Prison Island and a Spice Farm tour with Salum - he was awesome, very knowledgable, and got on fabulously with our daughter.  The resort was fantastic, our room entrance adorned with an archway of flowers upon arrival along with our bed, and we received 5 star treatment throughout the whole holiday - the same table reserved for us each night with flowers and happy birthday sung to my wife on her birthday Swahili-style - with a cake the following day, and a superb seafood platter included on the night.  Again our chairs were moved to a more private location (not to the beach as it is literally Sea Cliff !) and all three of our chairs were adorned with flowers.  I made the mistake of ordering a bottle of champagne thinking in Rands and Pounds and not realising it was actually US $205 - so that made the bill slightly expensive at the end but at least our $120 couples massage was thrown in as we were honeymooning.

Our daughter was accommodated and entertained at every stage and we didn't have to worry at any time - other than a single isolated incident where one of the waiters picked her up and dropped her into the swimming pool next to me when I was swimming - she is 28 months old and cannot swim at all unaided.  He got a mouthful from me but I think learned his lesson - everyone else was very hands-off and reluctant to pick her up unless helping her into a childs chair or similar.  In particular I would highlight and recommend the efforts of Neema, Mambo, Saviour, Asia, Saraphine and Captain Robert who all went above and beyond whenever we asked, as well as Zuwena who works tirelessly in the childrens club.

We also spent some time with the local guys who live on the beach along from the Sea Cliff - they are cut a hard time by hotel security in not being allowed onsite but are actually very genuine and hold tourism guide licenses - we ended up taking a dolphin tour with them very early one morning - the hotel and them could benefit greatly from mutual business opportunities.

I have some photos but would like to check with my wife if she minds me sharing them with you.

Thanks for all your help too.  The only area that went slightly askew was with our transfers from the airport - we were still due to land at 4pm rather than 1pm on our 1time flight, so we were left waiting and wondering for a little while, but the guys soon sorted that out and took us without any problems.

Regards,

Matt.

Client Feedback - Zanzibar Honeymoon

Dear Laura,

The honeymoon was superb. Chapwani was just delightful and a fantastic place to stay incredibly peaceful after all the madness from the wedding. The staff were so friendly and our surprise moonlit dinner with our own waiter was really special.

Unguja lodge also superb. The room was stunning and the daily monkey appearances were fun. Beautiful scenery and again lovely staff.

Breezes was nice but a bit too commercial it didn't have the personal atmosphere as the others had. But we did love the cigar and whiskey bar. I was slightly shocked that they wouldn't let a wheelchair bound man and his family have a late check out.

Ras nungwi stunning views, food and lovely room. Again amazing staff and the perfect end to our honeymoon.

We couldn't have asked for more and would love to go again one day.

Thanks for all the organising.
Jenny

Hi Jen,

We just wanted to say a massive thank you for all of your help arranging our honeymoon.

We had an absolutely fantastic time and everywhere we went they knew we were on honeymoon and treated us like royalty, thank you so much for going the extra mile and facilitating all of those extra treats which made our honeymoon so special.

The rufiji river-camp was excellent, we had such fun there for the first four nights and saw so many animals on safari. Sally and Karl who run the camp were really lovely and made us feel so welcome. It was certainly one of the highlights of our trip and has certainly given us the taste for doing more safaris in the future.

Your recommendation of Essque Zalu was very appreciated. We got upgraded to a private villa and it was amazing, the villa, the food, the service, a wonderful hotel, probably the best we've ever stayed in, we had to pinch ourselves when we were being showed around.

Thanks again, it was a truely magical honeymoon which we will never forget. Without your help and guidance I do not think it would have been half as good as it was and not nearly so special.

Best wishes
Alex and Damian Snell

We look forward to dealing with you more and cannot wait for this exciting trip!

Client Feedback

Thank you so much John. I would just like to say that I was very pleased with the service you provided and we really appreciate your help, particularly in the advise you gave regarding the hotels and our stay in stone town. It is hard these days to find travel agents on-line that actually care about their clients and we definitely felt like you cared from beginning to end and you always responded really quickly and made the process extremely easy. I will definitely be letting my friends know about Pure Zanzibar and you should know that any of my future trips to Zanzibar will definitely be planned through you. Thanks again and take care John.

Client Feedback - Langi Langi

Dear Kylie,

Thanks for the congratulation, we had a fantastic honeymoon in Zanzibar, thanks for your cooperation.
Zanzibar is one of the most beautiful place, and LangiLangi is really a very good hotel, the rooms and the food, and everything was very good - maybe except the staff - they weren't so helpful sometimes.

Thanks for everything, and good luck in your job and your private life, see you next time. :)

Kind Regards,
Krisztina & Laszlo

Client Feedback - Unguja Lodge

Hi Laura,

The Unguja Lodge was fantastic, the familial environment was perfect for me since I was travelling alone.  Martin and the staff were incredibly hospitable and on a number of occasions, given that there were only a handful of guests we all joined forces for supper, which was lovely.  The villa was amazing, quite large for one person but it was incredible having an open air shower each evening.  Nick and the water sports team were so helpful in including me on various trips, I was fortunate enough to swim with dolphins, which was one of the most magical 30 minutes of my life and something I will never forget.

I loved having a family of black tail monkeys living in the rafters of my villa, but my only reservation about re-visiting the Unguja (as I will certainly be going back to Zanzibar with friends and family) is that the beach is very poor and while swimming at high tide is blissful, there is really nowhere to plonk a towel during much of the day.  My family love the beach and ocean so were we to go back to Zanzibar I may opt to stay at a hotel with more of a permanent beach.

My stay was completely perfect for me and what I needed and I can not thank you enough for recommending the Unguja as it was absolutely right up my street.

Thank you so much for all your help and it was wonderful to meet Kylie and spend some time with her.

Zoe

Client Feedback - Echo Beach and Kholle House

Hi Kylie;

We just got back on Friday actually.

Echo Beach was lovely, just what we wanted somewhere quiet, beautiful and very friendly. The donkey is no more though!! Everything went very smoothly, and the transfer company were very professional.

However we were a little disappointed with the Kholle house and were glad we were only there for one night! The bathroom was slightly cramped!

We did have a lovely time though so thank you again for all your help!

Client Feedback - Unguja lodge

Hi Kylie

Got back this morning.

We have had a wonderful holiday - Unguja Lodge was everything I was hoping for and much much more.  I could not fault anything.  Elise and Ralph were wonderful hosts - taking the time to meet their guests and making sure they were having a good time without being intrusive.  The Villas were exceptional and we were amazed at their size!!

The food was superb and the staff lovely, well trained, friendly and attentive.  The whole resort was clean, and the setting was great - right on the beach with wonderful snorkelling and lush gardens surrounding you.

I must thank you for all your help.  A lot of people we met during our stay had used your Company and everyone was pleased with the service that you provide - well done!!

We took the time to visit the local village and Stonetown and also did the spice tour.  Martyn went snorkelling with the dive centre and went swimming with dolphins!

Best wishes

Debbie and Martyn Wright

Client Feedback

Hi Bruce

I'm sorry it's taken me a month (exactly!) to get back to you.

Memories of Zanzibar are not long forgotten, we had a wonderful time. I thought I was in paradise, the sand pure white, the sea a perfect turquoise and warmth all day and all night. I think I should go back there right now!

We loved Unguja Lodge, everything about it. It's rustic charm, the tray of tea and biscuits every morning, the decor, the owners it was amazing. We got to swim with dolphins which our daughter thought amazing.

When we moved on to The Palms it was raining, in fact we had rain for the last 3 days, one day for most of the day. Although it was still warm we were rather trapped inside! On arriving at The Palms we were told we were the only guests and it was quite lonely and no people watching to do either. I have to say that the food was amazing and on the last night they asked us to write our own menu which was lovely, we really chose items they had already made for us. The staff were lovely and obviously very attentive. However we preferred Unguja Lodge, we missing the open air shower and the monkeys coming to steal our clementines (and scaring Katie on one occasion forcing her to look herself in the toilet!) and didn't really like all the mod cons of aircon, a kettle etc!

After 4 days in Zanzibar we were itching for something more active to do. There is only so much reading, sleeping, snorkelling, eating etc we can do. It was certainly too hot for tennis and we're not divers. We will go back but we will go for 3 or 4 days after a safari to unwind and we'll definitely stay at Unguja and we'll take supplies for the local school.

So we'll be in touch when we're planning our next trip.

Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year and you're enjoying the recent weather?!

Regards

Kerry

Client Feedback - Essque Zalu

Hi Kylie

Apologies for not getting back to you earlier - intentions was there but inundated with work waiting from our holiday!

We had an absolutely BRILLIANT break. The hotel and staff were fantastic, the food ....... what to say except we all packed on the kgs whilst there!

The manager upgraded us to a villa when we were checking in which was great and completely unexpected.

Weather co-operated completely and we had no rain apart from two early morning showers.

It really was a fantastic break for us and many thanks to you for all your work in making so enjoyable.

UNFORTUNATELY .............. it was too short at 7 days and we left loads of stuff out. So we will have to go back again to finish off !!

Cheers

Ted

Client Feedback

Dear John

Just wanted to give you feedback ...........

Thank you so much for organising our trip to Selous and Zanzibar this Christmas. We have a fantastic time. I hadn't really thought about the trip at all as I had been so busy at work and left with a small luggage bag with a few relevant items. So totally unprepared! We arrived In Tanzania amidst a bit of confusion and were really excited by the wee aeroplane which flew us to Selous. The safari was great and then we left for Zanzibar in a great storm. We arrived looking like drowned rats at the Z Hotel but the pent house was defintiely worth it. The staff were wonderful and they created a really lovely Christmas for all the guest - with mince pies on our beds and children's choir on Christmas eve. We even had a wedding at the hotel on the beach.............!

Anyway John, its always good to hear nice info and I wanted you to know we had a great time and thank you for all your hard work in putting it together .

I hope you had a good one too.

Best wishes,

Edwina Angell-James
